My wanderlust

I am 4 days away from my job and 1 step closer to funding my Euro-Afrika(Euphrica) dream. With an allocation of an upper limit of Sgd 6000 per year for 3, I'd the very least like to explore selected interesting places in every country of Europe and especially England in depth as it will my base then. I highly doubt I'd be able to visit Afrika during my entire uni duration due to resource(mainly time n money) constraints but I intend to in subsequent years for the dream to be complete. Haha so if you ever discover contact with me to have vanished for an unreasonably long period, I might just be lost/abducted/tortured/enslaved/killed while on one of my adventures or I should say, mis-adventures. Even worse, I may kena all of the above or some other disastrous permutation which we can find out from the truth table because it never lies! Okay what a fucked up math joke. No Haha this time.

The Busker

Today was a really long day.. Woke up pretty late.. Ard 12 plus... It is so great to wake up and not have any work to do.. Went over to a friends place... Went to an asian restaurant to have beef rendang for lunch... Then went to watch Tristan + Isolde, which was pretty good... Had pizza for dinner... And that was at around 8 plus... In melbourne however, that is the equivalent of 11 plus.. cause everything is closed... feeling extremely unsatisfied with a meagre 8 hours out on a saturday, i decided to head over to crown... which is the casino btw... i however decided against gambling.. esp since i am $200 up on the casino and am reluctant to allow this figure the opportunity of wavering in an unfavourable direction... so instead i went walking around... and i saw this huge crowd near the casino... they were all watching something... i went over to see a busker performing an extremely comedic juggling routine... as i watched him... i realised something extremely interesting... i have actually seen this guy perform before... in singapore... im not sure who i saw it with.. but it might be justin... justin.. when u finally get back from india and read this.. do u rem the guy who juggled axes.. and who hit a cigarette from a stuffed bear with a whip? anyway.. i just thought it was a pretty cool coincidence... that sums up my saturday... school was funny last week though... one of my friends told a girl, "i think u like me". hahahahaha... and he didnt even have reasonable evidence to back this up... also... had my clinical visit... during which... i saw a doctor drop the cap of one of those needles to draw blood from the finger into a dustbin.. and casually pick it up and reuse it as if nothing happened... need to get a radio soon... otherwise im gonna be listening to the same songs im currently listening to for the next 6 years... gotta go shower now.. cya...

Blind

In conjunction with 'my flavour of the week' mentioned in my previous entry, Blind by Lifehouse beyond doubt fits the bill as one of the coolest songs I've heard. It is also one of those songs I literally, listen to over and over again. Blind is exactly like an emulsion of Red-Bull Vodka, where effects of a stimulant as well as a depressant are produced simultaneously; it inexplicably manages to keep my being still(though not at all depressed) yet buoyed with the injection of life. Although unlike the ever popular hits like You're Beautiful by James Blunt or Top Of The World by The Carpenters which make the perfect sing-along at a campfire, this moderately pacey song functions best when played while strutting along the sidewalks of the city. In your motion, I swear it would just detach you from the hectic world out there till you ultimately become oblivious to your environment as immersion in this song is complete. Blind would for certain be an eye opener for those who've yet to or are reluctant to step into the arena of contemporary music. Lifehouse and Rita Hayworth, despite her unparalleled ethereal beauty, are still therefore inextricably linked with being crowd magnets as their common denominator.

The 6 months

Although I still suscribe to this adage of 'an idle mind is the best way to relax,' I decided to occupy my next 6 months with a regular job. Also I have purged my initial ideas of extending my service with the Arsed Forces, with Full-time pay though, because I considered the amount I'd earn to greatly pale in comparison to my projected earnings as a fully fledged lawyer. Moreover, I had intended to store up this earnings in the bank which pays out meagre insignificant interest and is in essence, equivalent to nuts. I will thus be plying my trade at Singapore Airlines, with their Flight Operations team, where I can learn a thing or 2 about pilot training and familiarise myself with my prospective employers which may prove useful in the unlikely event I choose the path as a pilot. It is unlikely because if I do, I would for certain, crash my concorde with full thrust into Paris. My new job pays decently well and I will begin on April 1st.

Anyway, I discovered my good old mercenary and havoc self to have resurfaced when I needed it most. So, as the emotional strings connected to Tekong have snapped, I can now confidently say good riddance to the army, with a vengence! Malik said that it came too soon as he expected me to take 2 weeks to get over it but I'd simply like to attribute it to the Ides of March! Ha Ha Beware!

The Prata Man

We are now approaching the next phase of our individual lives. Which is why we are all going through so much pain to actually go through uni so as to be able to get a good job in the future that provides not only the bread for the whole family but also the hi-5 sets plasma tvs and what have you. More importantly, we are also aiming to get a job that provides us with some sense of satisfaction. I am saying this because, if indeed money was our only objective, then there are far easier ways to make money. For example, we can gamble, play shares and even sell prata. I know the first thing that strikes your minds now. Can selling prata really buy us the above mentioned luxuries? Yes indeed.

A plain prata sold in singapore can fetch up to 60 cents. That is already a huge profit considering that the whole box of flour plus the butter and the oil is only worth a fraction of that amount. Now imagine selling this same prata in another country where prata is not so common, for example in australia. To be more precise, college square*. The main customers that need to be targeted are the australians, who really love this prata. Imagine selling one for 5 australian dollars. Every day, we can expect customers to give us a neverending queue and hence a huge profit. There will come a time when our prata stall will be, inevitably, upgraded to a restaurant with the heading ' the prata man'.

Now we have to snap back to reality, because although the thought is worth entertaining, we know that this is not going to justify our 12 plus years of education, but nevertheless, in the most unlikely event that our education should fail any of us, this is something to fall back on.

*Now we are supposed to target australians but we have the prata stall in college square, in a place known for asian students. Here is the explanation. People are willing to travel for good food, and in the event that the business is not doing as well as we expected it to, we have a certain asian there to help us keep afloat.

The Chemistry

Chemistry sucks... The teachers in med fac dont even know what they are talking about with regards to chemistry.. using terms like cofactor, coenzyme and prosthetic group very interchangeably when they all have different meanings... this has led to the confusion again, of a guy named luke... i studied countless hours today but got next to nothing accomplished... things had better pick up.. or im never gonna finish studying the stuff for my exam next friday...i have retired from cooking... and have been eating out almost every meal. every day... sometimes including breakfast... everything closes at 6... which is ridiculous... i know im bitching.. but... i havent eaten prata in a month... so i think it is extremely excusable... gonna sleep... good night and good bye...

The last day

"Some things cannot be explained by science
while some things cannot be explained at all"
-Malik

This will most probably fall beyond the spectrum of your imagination but I've been plagued with the Stockholm Syndrome for quite a while already. Although ludicrous and also completely uncharacteristic of the Kenneth you know, these inexplicable affections have escalated since the third quarter of 2005, redoubling in intensity over the past as well as final week of my tiresome stint at Pulau Tekong.

So, this is how the greatest story ever told concludes- the captive crossed to the side of his kidnapper.

The initial hours of my recently recovered civilian life are somewhat accompanied by a rush of nostalgia inducted by an odd development of a deep affection for Pulau Tekong which I can no longer be part of. Yet she will always remain a part of me. Should I squelch or entertain this palate of dispirited emotions? I can but hope for this crestfallen stupor to wear off with haste as I'm helpless at answering that question, albeit itsa simple 2 option multiple choice one.

This endless day yields to its fate by drawing to a close as the sun continues its dip past the horizon with much reluctance, imploring to the heavens for even the slightest impediment to its motion. Night has already fallen, yet its rays last forever.

-Kenneth Wong. We will one day meet again.

Stage 1 - The prep

Indeed, the time is drawing nigh for me to forgo the comforts and familiarities of home and embrace the clutches of the 3rd world. On behalf of Luke and Malik, I'll be embarking on a pilgrimage to the land of kAmAtRa sUtRa.....
*pause for dramatic effect*
I'll be leaving for India on the 21st and I'm currently in the midst of putting the finishing touches to the itinery I've painstakingly planned from scratch from a confluence of info sources from a host of websites to lonely planet and a couple of other guide books, and consolidating them. It sounds really interesting and cool and once I get it typed out I'll post it. I've also done the train schedule for the entire trip from Calcutta to Delhi, Delhi to Agra and back, Delhi to Bombay, Bombay to Goa and of course, back to Calcutta to catch my flight back. Just booked my Delhi hotel which is called hotel bright and is situated at Connaught Pl, a prime ex-British establishment and tourist attraction. But I shall insist on detaching myself from this run-of-the-mill and passe 'tourist' jargon as I am afterall an independant traveller, an explorer, adventurer, in short just 1cm short of Columbus. Gonna get my backpack tomorrow and probably will blow 200 over bucks on an american brand with a lifetime warranty. So I'll be gone 14 days and pls wish me luck that I don't stumble into a bomb anytime, esp after copious amounts of dirt-cheap kingfisher beer that will more likely poison than inebriate me. Haha. Will keep you adventurer wannabes posted to quell your jealousy of my cool trip. Lol. Ciao

A break in a break

I've finally gotta much needed break from my holiday which spanned 3 whole months. This means that I am back in camp for the nostalgic one week before ORD. The air is refreshingly consistent and my surroundings have changed in one way or another, for the better at least. I also found new items such as a new computer just for round the clock gaming, yet to be used canon printer/scanner/photocopier, overused DVD player and even an air ionizer in my office! Most importantly, the big window along the wall of the entrance has just been tinted so that it's now one way, from a view from inside the office of course. The furniture has also been strategically shifted and positioned such that it's virtually impossible to be spotted sleeping from the front. For the record, we also have 4 telephones, of which only 2 are regularly used for work purpose. Also, thanks to all you taxpaying idiots, my dept often finds itself with an ever increasing surplus of funds, which probably explains why we had 5 cohesion dinners at decent hotel premises in 2 months.

By the way, my staff sergeant today handed me my Cert of Service and asked me to fill in whatever I wished under 'comment by reporting officer.' So this is how it goes..

This serviceman, through routine duties, has displayed dominant strength in being an effective communicator/mediator, an upright individual who lacks no courage in standing up for what is right, an influential leader and above all, a trustworthy and responsible person.

Among his peers, he is especially known for being patient with a cool disposition.

In his capacity as a WITS member and presentor, I have found him to be linguistically competent, both in speech and writing. Plus, he exudes confidence while speaking to a crowd.

However, he may at times, be slightly assertive and insensitive, yet hardly ever stepping out of line.

It is finally my considered opinion that he requires no formal correction/help with regard to his weaknesses as such life skills are best learnt through experience.

This best sums up the events this week thus far, with talking cock with my camp mates and bosses being the most interesting. Moreover, I found myself to have failed in my recent endeavours of pulling off yet another illegal stunt in camp because I realised I've been given too much freedom and power. I am invincible.. nearly!I'd have to do ludicrous and absurd stuff like streaking or vandalising the Tekong statues to cross the very distant line, which I obviously have no intention to.

The Notes

My med notes are of suprisingly poor quality... I think a bio teacher could do a significantly better job... and this stuff is being prepared by doctors... The most irritating thing is the usage of notations that are not defined... They just use these variables in equations without defining what they are... which leads to one thing... a very confused guy named luke... if their notes are so lousy, i really dont see what purpose they serve when students have to just refer to their textbooks anyway... in other lecture news... i have been informed that the pretty girl in lectures is attached... anyway.. it is next to impossible to sit with her since she has a whole group of girls who know no one but each other with her all the time... to sum things up so far... i am screwed... on a more positive note, i watched matchpoint today... i know its really quite old... but it just started showing here... it is a really great show... among one of the best i have watched for a long time... i love it when the opera singing starts as background music to denote an impending tragic event... I also must add that the main character is pretty skillful at seducing girls... He manages to seduce an engaged girl in less than a handful of encounters... There is a sale at borders for students from wednesday to friday... I will probably go down and buy something or other... And there is a free barbeque for the australia asian society tomorrow, of which i am a part. You can tell things are not going particularly well when a free barbeque is being classified as part of a positive note... My parents just arrived in melbourne today and will be staying with me for around a week... Well the week has been pretty screwed up so far but it is only monday... Hopefully the next time i decide to turn my thoughts to fonts, it will be under more favourable circumstances... Hahahahhahahahahhaaha... Cheers!

Vacation

Yo peeps.. I juz came back from a trip to m'sia with my dad and mum. cus my dad's oldest brother.. (so it's my oldest uncle) was celebrating his birthday, 70th one in fact. Anyway..we drove there.. and it was abt 6hrs of driving. My dad's hometown was kuantan..the capital of pahang. It's damn near the east coast too. Anyways, we set off on friday morn..and reached in the evening..after making several 2 stops at mersing and rompin (sounds like romping) for tea and toilet breaks.

Day 1~
ok, my aunt took us to have dinner upon reaching. We had lotsa crabs!!!!...and lotsa seafood..like fish, squids and prawns. And the cost of it all was damn affordable..cheap like hell.. after that.. went back to my uncle's (the one who was gonna have his bday celebrated) place to bunk in.. for the nite..

I was pretty devastated at communication over there..cus my mandarin sucks bad..and they cant speak english.. the only language they can speak fluently is cantonese (a dialect) and malay. So as a result..i was forced to spout broken phrases of chinese...to be understood..haha.. pretty farked..

the day kinda ended with me slacking in the bedroom with my cards..figuring out how to do some card flourishes..and then i fell asleep..

Day 2~
My aunt had a noodle shop which she sells her handmade noodles. it's damn nice lar the noodles. (she made a few bundles and gave it to my mum to bring home to cook on the day we left).. so we had breakfast there..

went to the beach after dat..to chill..the breeze was like a freakin air conditioner.. it was damn windy and cooling.. but for every action..there's always a reaction..and the reaction in this case were a few Hot babes (HOT!..SEXY..STEAMy!) from other countries.. i saw this damn pretty babe..but only came to realise..she was indonesian.. bah..had difficulty talking to her.. ok this was how it started..she was buying a meal from the macdonald's at the beach..and i was standing behind her.. cus of her hotness... i decided to perform some cards to her.. but had to do so very subtlely...(cus my dad was arnd u see)...

i told my dad i'd like to go arnd and perform..he was like.."huh?!?!?"...but before he cud say anything..i juz left the table...after finishing my fries.. oh yeah..i realised that she spoke malay..cus of how she placed her order at the counter.. i guessed that she was either malaysian or indonesian... but anyways...my bets were tilted more to the indonesian side..cus she looked like a tourist..cus of her hat and sunglasses... cudnt be malaysian...she looked loaded too

ok..here was how it went..i went to perform..and she was sitting with her parents..and they were pretty stunned when i came arnd..but i was like..have u seen magic?..her dad understands some english and he said yes.. so i performed to her dad..and in the midst..allowed her to participate in wadever shit i was performing.. so i asked for her name..and ..oh boy.. it was such an arduous task asking dat question..cus she cudnt understand..and her dad took such a long time to translate to her...and then i asked if she was indonesian..she said yes..

i went like..ahhh fark!!!...cus she was probably on holiday..no way i cud go out with her..haha...so i was like damn sad..

well, i left the beach after spending like 5 hrs there...viewing the rocks that were eroded to such an art like the ones we learnt in sec sch geog.. also explored the cliffs...and the babes on the beach..

the beach was a nice place to chill..and well..since it's so relaxing..it was no surprise..i cud conclude that the main population of the beach visitors to be mats...perhaps it's the beach..and they all have found a corner to relack..

went to a restaurant in the evening to celebrate my uncle's 70th bday. had shark's fin soup and all the goodies..like fried prawns and crispy duck and chicken..it was really a treat man...ate like hell...had some fun entertaining the kids too..

btw..i realised dat my dad's side of his family was spreading rapidly..and that i had more cousins than i have ever imagined..and my cousins..are all older than me..and some of the offspring are also older than me..and are with children!!!!..amazing..i'm like a grand uncle over there..to some of the kids.. yeah man..they breed fast..

ok.. now..everytime the kids see me..they want me to show them magic..damn sad la.. i realised..it's not gd to show everything u have within the 1st 2 meetings..or u'll run out of shit to display...my aunts decided that i should visit them more often cus they seldom see me arnd..and the kids will need more entertainment..haha..

went back for a shower..and was damn tired..so i juz fell asleep..

Day 3~ (sunday for ur info)
went to visit my youngest aunt..who has a shop selling clothing..cus my mum wanted to do their like "woman's stuff"..design clothes and find materials ...dat sorta thing..bored me to death..so i juz whipped out my deck of cards and started flipping and twirling...till i fell asleep.. then my dad said.. sleep ini the car..so i slept in the car..but when i awoke..i was at the beach again..cus my mum didnt tag along the day before..and she wanted to go..so we went again..

ok..if u were in my shoes ( which was..i was dying to see the babe again).. u'd feel my disappointment..cus i didnt see her.. damn sad..anyway.. i had fries again..and an apple pie.. and chilled..with my dad and mum by the beach..

after dat we went of to the park nearby..which was damn nice la..it was better than east coast park..i swear.. there were lagoons and lil bridges across...the lagoons..and lil "islands" within the lagoons..and they had little gazebos and pavilions..like damn romantic la.. then nearby the lagoons..there was this mini zoo..had goats (like luke) and deers..as well as other animals that were not ferocious enuff to eat meat in their untouched and raw form..(unlike luke who feeds on beef like a justin on brokeback)

anyways..my aunt's children..(my cousins) took my family out for dinner..and we had seafood again..lots of it..cus they knew that we're leaving the day after... so i was forced to eat like mad.. but it was damn delicious..

as a price of all the seafood..i was brave enuff to come up with new tricks with objects that i never played with before..like tissue paper..and chopsticks..and glasses... made up my own tricks..

anyways..the kids wun forget me after this visit..i'm pretty sure..cus i taught them 1 trick..haha..bet they are dying to learn more..

Day 4~ (day of departure)

we woke up early..to visit the aunt who makes the noodles..where she cooked a meal for us..seafood again!!!...the prawns were so huge..and it was pretty cheap too for a kg of prawns.. well..it was another treat.. juz before we set off..

on the way back.. we stopped at rompin again..(romping once more)..stopped for tea..and i saw this pretty gal..who had very uncouth and gangster like actions.. anyway..she was the daughter of the owner of the coffeeshop we were having tea at.. the best part was..she was pretty..and she looked young..arnd my age..or maybe younger by a year or 2.. but sad fact was..the lil baby her mum was carrying...was HERS!~!!!...fark!!!!...the baby looked like 2 years old lar..i was like W-T-F!~!... oh well.. if i was a m'sian citizen..the streets wud be full of gals carrying babies already...only thing on my schedule would be DNA tests... haha..but seriously..wad the hell la..

oh well..on my way back..i bought chewing gum to chew..sweet~..(rubber too...haha..but not condoms though..in case u think i'm gonna make condoms outta them kenneth)...

the whole trip was pretty fun...cus of the beach..and entertaining the kids and all...but there was 1 farked up thing dat happened the nite be4 we left..

this group of indians in the neighbourhood had a fight..and they were bleeding..the shit part was..whilst in their battle.. they damaged my dad's car..and my dad's car had some dents and some deep punctures in his body kit..farked up..there was blood on the bonnet too...those mofos..anyways..the police came and arrested all the mofos...hope they get hanged soon..

yep.. it was an interesting weekend that gave me a break from my boredom.. the lifestyle in ma'sia was damn slow and relaxed..no wonder they take their time to progress...but well..they are developing..perhaps i'd wanna buy some property there while it's still cheap..haha..or invest in their national banks..

alright..gonna practice my card twirling now..outz!

The Lectures

I have had one week of lectures now... Fortunately.. I dont have to pay much attention cause our first semester doesnt count for anything... Anyway... Things are supposedly getting alot harder next week... I finally found a pretty girl in lec.. Actually i didnt find her.. She happened to sit beside me.. Since then however, a series of unfortunate events has prevented me from sitting with her again... One of these events being me skipping lecture cause i was too sleepy to go... Anyway... The stuff im learning now isnt very interesting.. but at least the med ppl im with now are somewhat so... Spent a whole chunk of this afternoon playing bridge with them... Then went for dinner near my place.. Im living on lygon st, which is famous for the whole row of italian restaurants.. We just chose one and ate there.. It was good enough for the price.. Tomorrow i will be heading to ikea with my med ppl... And hopefully in the evening meet up with nick to watch soccer... He has been complaining to all our mutual friends that i have forgotten about him... which reminds me... malik is a tao bastard... i have talked to him less then 5 times on msn since coming i think.... Also, i will be viewing an apartment tomorrow cause im annoyed with college square's rip off rates on everything... The one im going to view is in the city.. but in the coming weeks, i hope to check out some along southbank as well, which are much further away, but relatively cheaper and can be quite nice.. i really need to find a place soon cause i have to inform college square if im extending my lease in the coming months... kk... tts all for now.. cya ppl!

Youth can be like beer

For those who've never crossed the line, you'll never understand. For those who've yet to, but see it coming in the less distant future, you'd better dearly cling onto the diminishing remainder of your prized days. Sometimes, I really wish I could erase the line because being 21 isn't all cracked up to what it's supposed to be.

The thrust behind my theory lies with the concept of a rapidly expiring youth or rapidly expiring borrrowed youth at this moment. This is most certainly unlike the years which preceded enlistment, where we could drink from the fountain like beer guzzlers, taking every gulp for granted, not realising that nothing lasts forever. Sadly, not even beer. However, at this time, I can but unfortunately only muster an evaporating puddle, affording a sip at a time.

Before I take my sip, I'd stare into the puddle only to discover a decade of unspent youth, the numerous years of unachieved ambition or lack of them, as well as one lifetime thus far of meaningless laughter I so enjoyed, yet not ingoring the occasional highs. Then I swirl the puddle to create as many and lasting ripples as possible, to distort the image I see. It thus makes me re-evaluate whether I'd ever want to drink from it again, so I could do away with the glimpses. Guess that beer would do as fine. Yet as always, I assert that it is far from futile compared to those 2 damned years in the army.

Apart from Luke, university, which allegedly is a carefully controlled medium that cultures the 'time of our life,' awaits the rest of us in the forseeable future. My take on this is actually also my resolve of having as an explosive a blast as possible, not forgetting to strive equally hard for good honours. I hate it because I especially await university with such great anticipation, yet underneath it all, I know that as rewarding as it may hold out to be, it must end someday, a wee few years from now before the fountain runs dry. But hopefully again, not the beer! From then on would I have to give a shit about marriage, bringing the bacon home and other silly domestic commitments which I'd rather not think about. Incidentally, shelving the prospective mid-life crisis aside, we can always look forward to retirement which I am planning on right now; Central America(Bermuda, Mexico, Barbados, Jamaica and all you West Indies!) here I come! I'd prolly get plastic and a voice-box surgery to integrate into the Rastafarian community! Ooh baby I love your way, no woman no cry and invariably, red reddd wiiiinne... UB-40 all night long....

More seriously, I hope to one day fathom, in heart especially, what some older and in this instance, dead folk like Antoine De Saint-Exupery(author of The Little Prince) really mean by youth being something independent of age and only a state of mind(not a drunken haze of course).

-Kenneth Wong. Buy me a magnum bottle of Fosters this Christmas. Thats why I left my name.

Literati Victori

This short entry serves to mark a milestone in my literati endeavours. I attained a score of 2304 with my last game ,which is by far my highest. Indeed, surpassing 2300 is an achievement in itself and i'm definitely feeling damn cocky now. Now, I can look back at this entry anytime when my score takes a downward spiral or even when my skills get rusty and remind myself that I was once up there.
